A Town of Wappinger woman was in critical condition Monday night after she swerved her car to avoid a collision and landed in a creek, state police at Wappinger said. Margaret Gaylord was driving north on Smith Crossing Road about 4:45 p.m. when she swerved to avoid a southbound vehicle heading for her, police said. According to police, Gaylord lost control of her car and crossed into the southbound lane before driving into a creek off the west shoulder. New Hackensack Fire Department and emergency personnel removed Gaylord from her car as it filled with water, police said. She was taken by ambulance to St. Francis Hospital in Poughkeepsie for internal and facial injuries. (Poughkeepsie Journal)
