18-Wheeler Flips, Killing Driver
On Friday, May 30, 2003, New Hackensack was dispatched to a MVA rollover
with entrapment. Upon arrival, members found the 24-year old driver
of the tractor trailer pinned inside the vehicle at bridge on Route 376
at the intersection of Degarmo Hills Road. Witnesses stated the driver
seemed to have difficulty with the brakes when he tried to avoid a van
that was attempting a left turn onto Degarmo Hills Road. New Hackensack
requested assistance from Hyatt's Garage in East Fishkill and Lagrange
Fire Department. It took roughly two hours to extricate the victim
from the cab. Due to fuel, hydraulic fluid and transmission fluids
spilling into the creek, the NYS DEC was also requested to the scene.
Unfortunately, the driver was pronounced dead upon arrival at St. Francis
Hospital. The emergency responders did a great job in their attempts
and we would like to thank Hyatt's and Lagrange as well as the members
of Hillside Lake ambulance that were on the scene assisting.

Upon Arrival, members of Hillside Lake Rescue Squad were attending
to the patient as they were in the area.

Members begin to size up the situation and the HURST tools are brought
out to remove the door to try and gain access.

Hyatt's Garage hooks to the tractor to assist with stabilizing the
cab. The van sustained damage and was towed away.

Members of Lagrange place patient on the backboard for removal.
The HURST rams were used to lift the cab from the cut roof.

Interior of cab as you can see the steering wheel has been cut to gain
access and is almost resting on the guardrail. View of cab after
patient was removed.
