New Hackensack Teams Up With Millbrook and Unionvale
March 23, 2007
On Friday evening, New Hackensack Fire Department took their mascot Sparky and their fire safety trailer on the road to join Millbrook and Unionvale Fire Departments in teaching fire prevention education to several Boy Scout troops at the Alden Place Elementary School. Almost 60 kids spent the evening learning fire prevention tips and checking out the latest fire equipment used by the fire departments. New Hackensack's popular mascot, Sparky spent some time talking with the group along with firefighters from Unionvale and Millbrook. Afterward, the group made their way outside after the fire alarms were activated in the school to practice exiting the building. Once outside, the kids learned important home fire safety tips in New Hackensack's fire safety trailer. The kids first made their way into the Kitchen where they learned about cooking safety, then into the Living Room where they learned about safety around the fireplace and other important tips. Then, the room was filled with fake smoke and the kids crawled into the bedroom to safety. In the bedroom, the kids were reminded not to hide under the bed and to stay calm if they can't get out of their room. The smoke detectors were activated and the kids felt the simulated fire door for heat. Since the door was hot and they knew there was a "fire" on the other side of the door, they exited via the back window where they made their way to the meeting place, which was the mailbox out in front of the trailer.
