Myers Elementary School Visit

October 14, 2005

On October 14th, New Hackensack Fire Department spent the day visiting with the kids of Myers Corners Elementary School as part of Fire Prevention Awareness Week. Ten of New Hackensack's finest spent the the day visiting all the classrooms from Kindergarten through 5th Grade. Kids learned important tips about candle safety, practicing exit drills, having a meeting place, and testing smoke detectors. After spending time in the classrooms, the kids were then visited by New Hackensack's mascot, Sparky the Fire Dog. The team then enjoyed a few hours of lunch with the kids along with their other mascot, Sparky and Pumper the Robot. This year's Fire Prevention Theme was "Use Candles With Care... When You Go Out, Blow Out!". Statistics show that candle fires are one of the few types of home fires that have increased dramatically over the past decade, and two out of five home candle fires start in bedrooms. With the holiday season coming upon us, the use of candles nearly doubles with the leading source of fuel being holiday decorations. So, whether you are using candles for romantic dinners or celebration, remember that your dealing with an open flame. Treat it with respect..
